NEWS LETTER JULY 2002
9th July 2002
Welcome to this month’s newsletter.
The World Cup is now finally over and having had the best part of the country captivated with it we can write off June as a very poor month in the retail market. That is unless you own a pub of course. Many traders in all sorts of industries have reported a very poor June directly due to the Jubilee and Football. With that all behind us we can all do with a couple of months of good weather so that we can get on with the job of enjoying the summer season.
As we get further into the summer it gets to that time of year where we put out the warning about the potential problems that can arise from using the tap water. For the benefit of everyone who is new to this subject or reading this on our website for the first time, let me quickly mention some of the hidden dangers in the tap water. As the outside temperatures increase during the summer months the bacterial activity in the water supply has the potential to increase also, the water authorities cover this by increasing the disinfection process that they use by up to 2 or 3 times the winter rate. As fish keepers we should all be treating the tap water with a good quality water conditioner before we use it for our regular water changing and tank/pond maintenance, but in summer months we should increase the dose rate of conditioner to cover the actions mentioned above. This increase should be at least twice the normal dosage. Anyone who does not use a conditioner on the tap water before they add it to any pond or tank is asking for trouble, long gone are the days where you could leave the water to stand for a few days prior to using it. That theory worked for chlorine but in the modern world chlorine is/has been replaced with nasty toxic chemicals such as chloramines and hypochlorite. These chemicals do not dissipate out on their own, so they must be neutralised with a good quality conditioner. If these chemicals are not removed you are effectively poisoning your fish, and the more untreated tap water you add the higher the level of chemicals will become, until they reach a level that the fish will not tolerate which can result in serious secondary problems such as bacterial and fungal infections setting in many cases the fish will die as a result. So this subject is not to be taken lightly or ignored. The safest way to keep ahead of the water authorities and their nasty chemicals is of course not to use their tap water at all for your fish keeping. This is where our special Pre made water for fish keeping comes into it’s own. This water has all the harmful chemicals, heavy metals, nitrates, phosphates and toxic substances removed to make it completely safe for your fish, and at the same time it has had all the essential minerals and trace elements that you fish need for a healthy environment added to make this the ultimate and safest water you can use for your fish. Many of our trade customers are now using our pre made water for their regular water changing, and have commented on how the fish are healthier and more active as a result. Our Website has full details about the full range of water that we supply. Anyone who does not has access to our website can always contact either ourselves or one of our official suppliers listed on the website for a brochure that covers this subject.
